ANSI Z358.1 Compliance: Emergency Eyewash & Safety Shower Requirements

What is ANSI Z358.1?

ANSI/ISEA Z358.1 is the American National Standard for emergency eyewash and shower equipment. It sets the minimum performance, installation, maintenance and training requirements for eyewash stations, eye/face wash stations, drench showers and combination units.

It matters because OSHA's own rule, 29 CFR 1910.151(c), only says employers must provide "suitable facilities for quick drenching or flushing of the eyes and body." OSHA does not define suitable. When inspectors need a benchmark, they reference ANSI Z358.1. In practice, meeting Z358.1 is how you demonstrate compliance.

Across all types: tepid water 60 to 100°F (16 to 38°C), a valve that activates in 1 second or less and stays open hands-free, and an unobstructed location reachable within 10 seconds of the hazard.

How often must eyewash stations and showers be inspected?

There are two cadences, and both are required.

Weekly. Plumbed units must be activated weekly. The purpose is to flush the supply line of sediment and reduce the risk of stagnant water and microbial growth. Self-contained units (such as gravity-fed or portable eyewash) must be visually inspected weekly and maintained according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Annually. Every unit, plumbed and self-contained, must undergo a full inspection against the installation and performance requirements of the standard. That means verifying flow rate, water temperature, spray pattern, and that the equipment still meets the location and access rules.

What water temperature is required?

Tepid, defined as 60 to 100°F (16 to 38°C), for the full 15 minutes. Water that is too cold discourages a victim from completing the flush; water that is too hot can drive chemicals into the skin and eyes and scald. Tepid water delivery is one of the most commonly failed requirements because it depends on the plumbing and any mixing or tempering valves, not just the unit.

How close to the hazard must a station be?

Within 10 seconds of travel, which the standard treats as roughly 55 feet (about 15 metres). The path must be on the same level, well lit, clearly marked, and free of obstructions and doors that could slow a person whose vision is already impaired. For strong acids, caustics and other highly corrosive substances, best practice is to place the unit immediately next to the hazard rather than at the 10 second limit.

Does OSHA require ANSI Z358.1?

Not by direct adoption. OSHA enforces 1910.151(c), the general requirement for suitable drenching and flushing facilities, and uses ANSI Z358.1 as the recognised yardstick for what "suitable" looks like. Many state plans, insurers and corporate EHS policies reference Z358.1 explicitly. Treat it as the operative standard.

ANSI Z358.1 vs EN 15154: what is the difference?

ANSI/ISEA Z358.1 is the United States standard. EN 15154 is the European standard, published in multiple parts covering plumbed and non-plumbed body showers and eyewash units. The two share the same goal but differ in specific flow, temperature and test criteria. Operators with sites in both regions, or manufacturers selling into both, often need equipment and inspection records that satisfy each standard. Keeping one compliance record that maps to both is the practical challenge.
